IOS AMPHITHEATRE & SECRET SUNSET: THE EXPERIENCE
This open air amphitheatre named after a Greek poet, is made entirely out of Marble and seats up to 11 people. It sits on a hill behind Chora that overlooks the old city and the sandy shores of Mylopotas.
Like any properly constructed amphitheatre, if you stand right in the centre you can hear your voice ‘amplified’ back to you. Being Zade’s first visit to such a structure she went down to give it a whirl.
Although beautiful, the amphitheater wasn’t our main destination for the evening. It was just the nearest access point to another spot that we had seen incredible images from. This spot isn’t entirely known to the world yet and that could be because it’s not really open to the public. I mean, you might be semi trespassing if you visit this spot but hey at least it’s quiet right?
To get here you need to face towards Chora and climb over a somewhat sturdy but unmaintained stone wall. Just past there you’ll see the remains of an old windmill and the BEST SUNSET SPOT IN IOS.
When we arrived there was one lady here who already claimed prime position on the windmill wall so we explored further down. It really wasn’t too difficult to find another spot to setup as the whole area had unobstructed views over Chora and the port.
We found us a pozzie on a rock and settled in. Yet again we were blessed with an incredible show of colours.
Some time during dusk the lady who was occupying the old windmill had vacated leaving it free for us to climb. We ran back up the hill so nobody else would beat us to it – although we knew we were the only ones here at this point.
This was undoubtedly the best sunset spot we visited in Ios. We shared it with just one other lady whom left shortly after the sunset and the views here not only included the port and nearby island Sikinos but also the 4 churches hill of Chora and the old city below.
