The info online for Bens Walk is a little bit contradicting. So when we arrived we asked a local who said it was a 30 to 45 minute round trip – if you’re there to exercises AKA walk briskly. There are two starting points. One at the Hanging Rock lookout and the other a little further to the left.
We entered via the second point. The track lead immediately down the escapement via a pretty rough bush track. The path is made up of large stones, wooden retainer steps and dirt which blend perfectly into the natural environment.
At the bottom you’ll find a suspension bridge that was rebuilt in 1982 after the original collapsed. Information like this prior to the walk gives us so much faith when crossing *note the sarcasm.
On the other side the track opens up to a big grassland. It gets a bit muddy on this side but to the left there’s another trail just behind the trees that alot better. The next crossing point looks a lot more difficult than it actually is. There’s quite a clear path over the rocks with some parts carved out like a little steps.
When you arrive back at the suspension bridge you can choose to other go back up the way you started or continue along the path. We would suggest you continue because the end of this loop is just wow! You’ll walk beneath Hanging Rock where more wooden retainer stairs. The track bends and winds uphill so you’re never quite sure of what’s next which makes it all the more exciting.
Once you pass through a large boulder with a narrow pass cut through it you’re almost at the end of the loop. One final set of stairs will bring you back to the top. If your looking for the shortest walk possible instead of crossing the suspension bridge you can turn left at the bottom which will take you under the rock and back up to the top in about 15-20 minutes. And if you want to see this spot at its prime then make sure you visit Hanging Rock (experience guide here) at sunset. Trust me it won’t disappoint.
