The Anzac Memorial Walk is a beautifully designed tribute to the regions Anzac’s and Newcastle’s steel making heritage. The walk is situated above Memorial Drive with a 450 meter long cliff top walkway that links Newcastle’s Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach.
We started the walk around mid day and parked in a small car park on the corner of High St and Memorial Drive which is the start of the Memorial Walk. Although it was quite overcast when we visited, we think the views of the ocean are amazing in any light.
Halfway along the bridge we took some time out to pause and enjoy the scene. Below us was a large flat rock surface that the waves were washing up against. We leaned on the railing and watched an ant size man walk along the rock.
Just to the right was two of the cutest little bays we had seen in a while. We continued the walk down the stairs to join the cycle path below and followed it until we reached Bar Beach car park. Thats when we noticed the unmarked obviously local shortcut to the above bays.
It was a lovely walk to admire the coast, a whole lot easier than other coastal walks out there and a nice remembrance for our fallen soldiers that gave their lives to protect the country we call home. We would definitely recommend the Anzac Memorial Walk if visiting Newcastle even if its just to find your surname.
