OIA TO FIRA HIKE: THE EXPERIENCE
What. A. Day. We were SO excited to do this walk after we heard how beautiful the views were. The hike to Fira is 10km one way and it took us 2.5 hours to get to Imerovigli which from there, was another half an hour to Fira. The initial plan was to start as early as possible to attempt beating the heat. But our plans changed once we realised that we slept in! So we started the hike just after 10am and the sun was already well and truly beaming. People typically start the walk from Fira and end up in Oia but we were staying in Oia so we thought we would give it a go from there!
We started the hike from the center of Oia along the main path and followed it all the way down passed all the stores until we reached a church and some accommodations. Already from this point the views behind were looking beautiful so we stopped for a quick photo break.
We kept walking down until we reached a car park area with this warehouse.
It was at this point that we started getting some elevation along the trail and started to really feel the sun. We passed a couple and asked if they had come from Fira, they said they came from Imerovigli and that it definitely wasn’t the easiest hike but well worth it. So after a few minutes catching our breath, me second guessing this hike and Jackie giving me a quick pep talk to shut my apprehensive ass up, we kept on walking!
We passed a small church and then came to quite a steep part. Pushing through, we looked up to see another church. This one had more of a shaded area which was a nice little touch of motivation to look forward to. Once we got to the church we were met with another 4 people having a shade break too. This church was named the Church of Panagia and had the most beautiful archway with a backdrop of the ocean, Oia, and surround islands.
About 10 minutes down the track, we passed a beautiful bend that felt like we were standing way up in the clouds. Because of the island’s half moon shape in Santorini, from this point you could get a really good view of the tail end.
From here we walked another 20 minutes or so along a fenced path then before we knew it, we met one of the smartest people on the island… The lady who owned a pit stop cafe along the trail with icy cold drinks and snacks. You smart lady, you smart. Best believe that peach ice tea was devoured within minutes! A quick breather and drink and we were off again. Its from this point where we walked along the road for about 20 meters before we got back on the track. Bear in mind there isn’t exactly a “sidewalk” as such. More of a strip of gravel.
It was here that we approached the steepest part of the walk. We had a couple behind us wearing flip flops who had very concerned looks on their face. BUT guess who all soldiered on, flip flops or not! Again we met another smart woman, this one was selling fresh fruit from the back of her car. We picked up some grapes and a banana to give us a little more energy.
The views were beautiful but it was damn hot and we were in struggle town! we kept pushing on until we reached Imerovigli. Then we decided to get a well deserved beer and some chippies, hire a car and go back to Oia where we had to check out of our accommodation and go to Fira to check into our new accommodation!
Overall, the hike itself was beautiful, but we would STRONGLY suggest doing it at sunrise or even sunset. That way it will be more enjoyed and less of a struggle with the Mediterranean sun!
