SARAKINIKO BEACH: THE EXPERIENCE
Not sure if on earth or moon… Sarakiniko Beach was something we’ve never experienced before. The landscape is a wide stretch of white volcanic rock formations with a soft chalky texture – similar to what we visualize the moon to be. Far from your typical stretch of sand and sea, Sarakiniko has one main inlet with shallow water and some bigger inlets where you can jump off the rocks. The best thing about Sarakiniko is that it’s so vastly unique and adventurous that you have the opportunity to both explore and chill.
When we arrived we parked our ATV in the designated area and headed straight down to see this magical place in the flesh. As we were walking down from the parking area it was excitingly fascinating seeing the surface slowly shift from rough gravel to that soft chalk. When we reached the moonscapes we were in awe. The contrast of bright white rock against the Mediterranean blue sea was unreal. We instantly flew the drone up and once we had it up we only ever brought it down to swap the batteries! The views were out of this world.
We got down to our swimmers and had a little dip in the main inlet, it was quite shallow but still so refreshing and peaceful. We then crossed over to the other side of the inlet to find more gems. There was some amazing views on this side where people were jumping off the rocks. We weren’t that game but so we walked up to the top and saw the surface change yet again. It looked like ripple waves had been imprinted on the ground. It was just so beautiful.
We came back to Sarakiniko for a sunset the next night and got some more magical views. Saw some locals fishing and saw the moon standing from the moon! Its the kind of place we could spend hours on end exploring and chilling.
Sarakiniko was probably the most long awaited destination of our Greece trip. The images we had seen of this place made us want to jump on a plane straight away. When we got to Milos in early October (our final stay of the Cyclades) the weather wasn’t looking too great. So we basically had one day where the sun would be out and shining so of course we made this the day our Sarakiniko visit. In the touristy months, this place can become quite crowded and full so by planning our stay in early October, yes we were free of the crowds but it was becoming a little chillier. If we would recommend the best time to go, it would be around mid September, that way the weather would still turn up. Make Milos a MUST when visiting the Cyclades!
