The South Head Heritage Walk is a very pleasant one. Especially in the late afternoon. Showcasing some of the most beautiful cliff side views, small bays, heritage listed cottages and the lovely Hornby Lighthouse.
1. LADY BAY BEACH
The first major point of interest – in my view – after leaving Camp Cove is Lady Bay Beach which is set directly below the cliffs edge. There’s a metal staircase that takes you down with rocks large enough for you to lay out on the left and the sandy shore to the right. Be warned, Lady Bay Beach is an official nude beach and one of the few left in NSW.
2. LIGHTHOUSE COTTAGES
Just past the stairway you’ll arrive at Lady Bay Lookout that looks over the beach and into the city. Next you’ll see the sign for the South Head Lookout. Continue on until you see the old lighthouse keepers cottages and pass some large flat rocks that face back toward the city making them an awesome spot to watch the sun go down.
3. HORNBY LIGHTHOUSE
Then, just around the bend you’ll see the large cylindrical candy cane building known as Hornby Lighthouse which marks the southern entrance to Sydney Harbour. It makes a great shot as the colours really pop againsts the blues of the Ocean and sky.
4. RETURN WALK
Continue following the path north past the lighthouse and you’ll see a large gun emplacement. This spot also provided a nice viewpoint back to the candy lighthouse. Follow the path for a.couple of hundred meters until it rejoins the original track to lead you back to Camp Cove.
