VOUDIA BEACH: THE EXPERIENCE
As told by Jackie Te-Aroha
Voudia is a lovely quiet beach covered in soft white stones with milky blue water that washes up on the shore ever so calmly. Its an unorganised beach (meaning it has no facilities such as toilets or nearby cafes) and is located in the north eastern side of the island away from the more popular hotspots.
We hired a car and took the route along the northern side of the island after taking the advice of google maps and a short attempt at the unsealed road through the centre which I’d describe more as a tractor path. And unless you’ve hired a powerful quad and enjoy rough off-road adventures we advise you take the more pleasant ride along the top too. The northern road will take you pass the turn offs for other sights such as the infamous Sarankiniko, Alogomandra, Papafaragas and the town of Pollonia so its a goodie if your looking for a full day adventure.
After you pass Pollonia you’ll start to notice a stark difference in the roads as you come closer to the quarry. The road will come out towards the coast and just before it takes a sharp right you’ll notice a small levelled area that caters for 3-4 cars. Pull up here and take the crumbled pathway immediately to the right which will take you directly down to the shore. As you can tell by that description, this isn’t a beach for city slickers and yuppies.
It’s a beautiful shoreline and we heard there are even some caves here to be explored which may require some climbing and swimming in high tide. If you’re looking for a large open beach that’s a lot more private then this spot is definitely for you! But you know the drill when it comes to unorganised beaches… strictly BYO snacks.
